Mean Machine (Up Jumped the Devil)
The exhibition is devoted to, and exclusively inclusive of work with text made within the last 30 years. The works deal with cultural, economic, political, social and technological issues, as they situate within contemporary life. These works read as protest or warning signs for various systems. The use of text in each of the works communicates the artist’s thoughts, directly or indirectly, about these issues, as well as the relationship between art and real life events. They communicate a sense of urgency and project an awareness of issues within their time and the future. With each work, words matter.
